THE BOAT

Meteore2 is part of a large family of HR352s from the Swedish boat builder Hallberg-Rassy. 802 vessels of this model were constructed between 1978 and 1991. Meteore2 has hull no. 632.

I chose this great sailing boat for its ability to sail long distances comfortably. I opted for this model because aside from its appealing vintage appearance the boat is also designed to sail in nearly all sea areas, with the exception of the polar regions.

Meteore2 was equipped with all her modern instruments after her aquistion in 2015
during a substantial refit. All her standing rigging was changed by Profil Sails who also changed her instrumentation (to the brand B&G), and installed heating throughout (Eberspacher) which allows us to maintain a comfortable 20 C onboard during winter evenings at anchor.

The interior insulation installed by the boat yard and the teak teck make it possible to maintain an agreable temperature onboard and gives a very pleasant impression inside. Concluding, in addition to this being a boat that can take you almost anywhere in the world, it is also an elegant, warm and comfortable vessel.

In the interests of security, I decided to change the engine, as the previous Yanmar engine oil analyses was not positive. When the wind fades, meteore2 is powered by a Volvo Penta D2-40, with a Maxprop propeller. The Hallberg-Rassy’s semi-long keel sometimes makes harbour manoevres a little tricky, but under sail helps give her a very kindly motion that rarely slams in the waves.

Why a Hallberg-Rassy 352?

I was always attracted by old boats, ideally wooden boats, I love the feel and the smell of the wood but the maintenance of such a boat is no small matter. The option of steel or aluminum, is in my opinion not a solution either as it takes a lot of maintenance and careful prevention of electrolysis, which is why a resin boat seems to be the most sensible choice. Only a few boat builders manage to combine classic styling in a fiberglass construction. The Nicholson 35 and Contest 38 also caught my eye. So it was that I was heart struck with Meteore2 of which I am the third owner. Joel, the previous owner, had bought her for a round-the-world trip with his wife but, following a fright at sea, the project was abandoned.
